Dynamic (Overground) Endoscopy

Dynamic (Overground) Endoscopy For Your Pet | Gippsland Veterinary Hospital

Diagnosing airway issues in horses can be difficult when they are standing still. Dynamic Endoscopy allows the equine team at Gippsland Veterinary Hospital to look inside your horse’s throat while they are exercising at full speed, identifying respiratory obstructions that are affecting their performance.

Dynamic (Overground) Endoscopy FAQs

Just a few common questions about Dynamic (Overground) Endoscopy. If there is something else you need to know just ask in the Contact Us form below!

  • Does it hurt the horse?

No. The scope is flexible and sits in the nasal passage. Most horses tolerate it very well. We secure it carefully so it doesn’t flap around or irritate them while they run.

  • Can I ride my own horse for the test?

Yes! In fact, we prefer it. We want the horse to be ridden by its usual rider in its usual tack to recreate the exact scenario where the problem happens.

  • My horse only makes noise occasionally. Is this still worth it?

Absolutely. Intermittent faults are the hardest to diagnose. By using the dynamic scope, we can rule out major surgical issues versus fitness or tack issues.

  • Can’t you just use a treadmill?

High-speed treadmills are great, but they change the way a horse moves (biomechanics) and they don’t simulate the rider’s weight or head position perfectly. Overground endoscopy is the most “real world” test available.
