Foaling Mares

When mares foal, everything happens very quickl!!

In mammals there labour is split into 3 stages.

  • Stage 1 - the preparation of the birth canal and movement of the foal into the birthing position.
  • Stage 2 - the part where the foal comes out of the birth canal.
  • Stage 3 - when the placenta is passed.

Stage 2 - the actual foaling is very very rapid.  Most of the time it happens in less than 15 minutes.  This does not give a lot of time to correct things if they go wrong.

We offer a service to foal down mares at the Gippslane Equine Hospital.  We monitor the mares by camera, whereby we ensure they are watched 24 hours a day.  If we suspect a mare will foal overnight, we have a staff member sleep at the hospital to supervise, and we try to have at least one veterinarian and a nurse present for every foaling.

In the last 3 years we have had over 30 mares foal at the hospital, of which we can think of 3 or 4 that would not have done so without our intervention.
